That means my ongoing CMS learning curve gets another change of slope!

The automatic update from within the Dashboard on this very site was seamless; and lo, the Rev. Al spoke and you are now looking at a v3 site. Sheer magnificence and idiot proof to boot!

Well done WordPress community (is the Joomla community watching???)

OK, so I expected to be over this CMS itch by now, but an article in new article at SmartCompany.com.au got me thinking again.

Here is the article…

You see I’m still fiddling, tweaking, revising, editing and scratching with Joomla. This site is done in WordPress. I don’t know which is truly better as I think they are both limited by my inability to code an ‘uber template’ for either of them – and so I trawl the interwebs for something that catches my eye and fits the bill all in one.

But the scrooge in me shies away from the professional pay to license templates that are widespread, as I think that open source is open source. I know that the software is the open source bit and people can leverage a creative commons license to generate an income – it’s just that currently my intrigue in learning how to get better at the back end stuff is more dominant than the ability to get my wallet out!

So bear with me, and I’ll get to that particular cross roads in time…

So – the site has had a few incarnations of late.

As I find myself more and more time poor, I need to get smarter with the tools generally available and counter the progress of my technology investments/obsolesence…

I moved to Windows 7 (64 bit) and don’t have the funds to upgrade my software – so DreamWeaver is gone but the old site templates still exists (anyone know of an app that will read DreamWeaver templates?) so I have moved this site over to WordPress. [Learning Curve]

I’ve also used Joomla to set up a family friends site in a contra deal over solar panel installation [Another Learning Curve].

The common theme in both of these exercises is this:

Both tools are easy to use

WordPress is shinier in the back end

Joomla is a bit trickier to master

But generally both are great at getting a web site up and running; but the design of the site can be painful.

Yes, both WordPress and Joomla are free. Yes, there are lots of templates available for both. Yes, I’m not a compete numbskull when it comes to coding; yet I still struggled to get the best design available for either site – and I’m still struggling to get them ‘just right’.

So what does this mean? Stick with this site and hopefully one day it will be worthy of your attention and a great reflection of my mastery of WordPress or Joomla. In the meantime if you are looking to upgrdae away from static html and into a quasi CMS system you would do well to have a look at either…
